Assam was originally known as the Kingdom of Assam, during the reign of the Ahom Kings. Situated in the northeastern region of India, the state shares borders with countries like Bhutan and Bangladesh and is surrounded by the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. Together with Assam, these states are called the Seven Sister States of India. Many wildlife sanctuaries and reserves are present in the state of Assam, adding lots of color to its already beautiful landscape.

Assam is known all over for its rich culture and heritage and also for its biodiversity. The state has often been referred to as a traveler’s paradise. It is surrounded by tropical rainforests, bamboo trees, and deciduous forests and is home to a variety of unique animals and ecosystems. Some of the world-famous wildlife sanctuaries, like Kaziranga and Manas, are situated here. They serve as the abode of some of the endangered species of the world, like the One-horned Rhinoceros, White-winged Wood Duck, Bengal Florican, Black-breasted Parrot, Pygmy Hog, Hoolock Gibbon, etc. These two sanctuaries have been declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Brahmaputra (aka Tsangpo Brahmaputra) serves as the major lifeline of Assam. The vast river has its origins in the southwestern Tibet, as Yarlung Zangbo River and crosses India through the Himalayas, gorging into Arunachal Pradesh and then going southwest through the Assam valley. It finally merges with the Ganges, to form a vast delta. Barak plain in the south and Karbi Anglong and North Cacher hills form the other major geographical features of Assam.

The state has a number of forts, monasteries and such other remnants of the different empires and dynasties that existed in the region at different times. All these places have a history of their own and speak volumes about the courage and valor of the different rulers of that era. If you want to visit and know the place in its real sense, then the best time to visit will be during the festive season. Being a home to one of the biggest assortment of indigenous tribes and cultures, innumerous fairs and festivals are celebrated here and a visit during these times will definitely add charm to your trip.
