Indasala Cave

Located in Rajgir district of Bihar Indasala cave is a major tourist attraction and a Buddhist pilgrim destination. The cave is considered sacred for the reason that Lord Buddha delivered one of his most intellectually stimulating discourses here. The discourse recorded in Sakkapanha Sutta is evident of his scholarship. These sermons to his disciples are of great relevance to understand Buddhism.

The legend of Sakkapanha is that Sakka was an inquisitive person and had wanted to know answers from Lord Buddha. He came to the cave where Buddha stayed for time being, and asked his ‘eight questions’ as mentioned in Buddhist literature. Buddha, as he was an excellent scholar and a discourse intellectual, gave the fitting answers to all his questions. The discourse, recorded in Sakkapanha Sutta, is a curious source of wisdom even today.

The beautiful cave of Indasala is situated at the bottom of a steep cliff of Giriyek Mountain. The cave, evidence of great intellectual discourse and uncovering of truth of life and ‘life-death cycle discourse’ is indeed a tourist attraction at Rajgir. Other than Indasala cave, there is one stupa, which is in existence since the times of Hiuen.

Indasala cave is easily accessible by newly constructed road. The newly constructed road is meant for the development of tourism at Rajgir and other Buddhist tourist destinations near Rajgir.
