On 11 December 1972, Sitamarhi district was carved out of the Muzaffarpur district. Situated in the northern part of Bihar, the district forms a part of Tirhut Division. One of the several districts of Bihar, it earlier had Sitamarhi city as its administrative headquarters. Long back, in 1934, the city of Sitamarhi witnessed a devastating and a worst earthquake, after which the districts headquarters were shifted to Dumra. The present headquarter of Dumra is located five kilometers to the south of Sitamarhi city.

The origin of the city has legendry association with Sita, the wife of Lord Ram. According to the mythology Sita sprang to life out of an earthern pot, when Raja Janak was ploughing the field somewhere near Sitamarhi, to please Lord Indra and ask him to bless the land with rain. It is believed that later, Raja Janak dig out a tank at the place where Sita emerged. After her marriage, he set up the stone figures of Rama, Sita and Lakshman to mark the place. An ascetic, named Birbal Das, came to know the site, where Sita was born and which had turned into a jungle, by divine inspiration.

Birbal Das found the images set up by Raja Janak and got a temple built at the same time. It was he who commenced the worship of Janaki or Sita at the temple that is today known as Janaki Mandir. The temple is apparently modern, being about 100 years old only. Other than this, the other places to visit in Sitamarhi include Haleshwar Asthan, Panth Pakar Pupri, Goraul Sharif and Janaki Temple (situated in Punaura, near Sitamarhi). The main reason behind a lot of tourists visiting Sitamarhi, from the different part of the country and globe, can be found in the presence of these religious shrines only.
