About 250 Kms from Rishikesh, Gangotri is one of the most pious Hindu Pilgrimage. Situated at an altitude of 3,200 m, the sacred shrine of Lord Shiva (Natural Rock Shivaling) is the source of the river Bhagirathi. The Shrine is surrounded by the peaks of Shivling, Satopanth and Bhagirathi sisters. Going by the legends, this natural rock Shivalinga is the place where, Lord Shiva sat when he received the Ganga in his matted locks. The shrine is visible when water level decreases during the winter months. The temple of Gangotri is located nearby the sacred stone. The temple and the township remains closed between November and May due to severe winter conditions .It opens on the auspicious day of "Akshay- Tirth", generally in the first week of May. Places to visit Gaumukh glaciers (18 km.) Gaumukh is snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the source of the Bhagirathi river. Pilgrims trek upto the sacred spot on foot or on ponies to take a holy dip in the ice-cold water. Enroute accommodation is available at Bhojwasa in Tourist Rest House.Further up from Gaumukh are Tapovan,Nandanvan, Chaukhamba - where famous peaks like shivling,Bhagirathi I,II,III, Kalindi are located and are scaled by mountaineers. Pilgrims also trek to Nandanvan (6 km) and Kedartal (18 km) from Gangotri. FACILITIES Gangotri is well connected to other parts of the country through air, rail and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, 26 km. From Rishikesh, 249 km. The local and State Transport bus services also connect Gangotril with many centres in the region while porters and ponies are available for excursions to Gaumukh and other places from Gangotri during the yatra season. Sports Mountaineering Gangotri Glacier is surrounded by many high peaks which offer challenging opportunities for mountaineering.
