Mumbai UniversityMumbai University is one of the oldest universities of Maharashtra and was initially known as the 'University of Bombay'. When the name of Bombay was changed to Mumbai, the name of the university was also changed. It was set up in the year 1857, under the 'Wood's Education Dispatch', and is one amongst the first three universities to be set up in India. During the last fifty years of its existence, the Mumbai University has undergone a lot of changes and has developed to a great deal intellectually.

It has provided moral inspiration to the society and through its students, is contributing to the development of the country. In the initial days of its establishment, the university emphasized more on teaching at the undergraduate level and in conducting examinations. However, with time, it has started Post-Graduate programs, along with professional courses. Mumbai University has also taken up research projects. Towards this end only, the School of Sociology and Civics & Politics was established.

With the independence of India, Bombay University Act of 1953 was passed. This led to the re-organization of the functions and powers of the university. Presently, it claims the distinction of holding a Five Star status, accorded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Mumbai University now comprises of two campuses spread over 230 acres and 13 acres respectively. The total built up area comprises of 22,000 sq. feet of class-rooms and 84,000 sq feet of laboratory space. The university now has two post-graduate centers and 354 affiliated colleges.
